Overview
The Home Equity rate table hadn't been updated in years. It was functional but passive — a list of lenders with an APR and a button, asking users to make one of the most significant financial decisions of their lives with minimal context. Bankrate's authority in the financial space is one of its strongest assets. The rate table didn't reflect it.
Solution
The brief was substantial: dark mode hero, revamped HELOC and HELOAN tables, a restructured "More Information" experience, Expert Take integration within lender cards, loan term filters, APR type callouts, and mobile filter behavior — all within compliance requirements and Bankrate's evolving design language.
The biggest risk with a brief that dense is treating it as a checklist. The real design challenge was grouping, sequencing, and restraint. The "See Details" expandable pattern became the structural solution — lender cards lead with the essentials and let users pull deeper on their own terms. Inside the expanded state, content follows a deliberate sequence: Expert Take first, then customer scoring, then pros and cons, then granular detail. Each layer earns its place.
On mobile, pros and cons were moved above granular details in the expanded state. Mobile users making high-stakes financial decisions want quick judgment signals first — "is this lender right for me?" matters more than repayment timelines until they've already decided they're interested.
Solution
The redesign launched as part of Bankrate's cross-site standardization effort. Engagement data is under NDA
